Initial full day
This course is for new staff who haven’t previously received any moving and handling training or staff who haven’t had training within the last two years. This course will be designed around your residents’ requirements.
Course content:
Introduction, Statistics, Legislation, Perception, Risk Assessment for moving and handling
Law and Duty of Care, Anatomy & Physiology, Unacceptable techniques,
Practical training in various methods of moving and handling and the use of equipment.
Aims of the course: To teach the students safe practices in moving and handling for both the service users and the staff and to update on unsafe practices. To make them aware of current legislation, the law and their duty of care, demonstrate risk assessing, give them an insight into the anatomy of the spine and explain how to avoid long term and short term injury.
Learning Objectives: By the end of the session participants will be able to:
• Demonstrate a knowledge of current legislation and understand what their duty of care involves.
• They will understand the effects of poor techniques and posture on their spine and the risk to the service users
• Be able to practically demonstrate good moving and handling techniques including the use of relevant equipment.
• Have an understanding of risk assessment, its’ importance and how it relates to the Health and Safety At work Act.
Course Duration: 6 hours.
In order that all students receive the maximum amount of practical experience, it is necessary to restrict the number to ten participants.
Assessments are ongoing throughout the session and all participants will receive a certificate of attendance indicating the course content and relevant NVQ units which this underpins. Prices Courses run in house

Moving and Handling - Update:
For staff who hold a current moving & handling certificate which needs updating. This course will be designed around your residents’ requirements.
Course content:

Key Skills Development Course
This course is designed to offer both Support Workers and Health Care Assistants a full and thorough understanding of their key responsibilities and how to utilise these skills within the team care setting.
Course Content :

Aims of the course:
During this 2 day course students will learn the theory and practical skills of risk assessment and the writing, reporting and effective recording of Care Plans. They will learn how to Safeguard Service Users under the Deprivation Of Liberty Safeguarding legislation through observation and awareness. Along with the knowledge to provide respect, dignity and a good working attitude whilst promoting and enabling Independence. The course is fascilitated using varoius training aids including that of a work book to be completed by each student throughout the course.
Learning Objectives:

Induction to Refresher
This course is aimed at Care Assistants and Support Staff and is intended to compliment the Common Induction Standards and can also be used as a refresher to the same.

Aims of the course:

Health & Safety/Risk Assessment
This course has been prepared for all staff and is designed to introduce or update the participants in the Health and Safety issues within the work place. It will clarify the importance of Health & Safety in the work place and take away the mystiques of Risk Assessment. It is important that everyone has an understanding of Risk Assessment as it forms the basis of workplace safety.
Course content:
Introduction, Health and Safety defined, Health and Safety Law,
Responsibility and Duty of care, the Management of Health and Safety,
Current Regulations, Risk assessment, Fire safety, Electrical Safety
RIDDOR, COSHH, PPE.
Aims of the course: To make the participants aware of the Health and Safety laws, regulations and their own responsibility. To give them a grounding of the various regulations that govern the working practices and give them the knowledge to risk asses and record/report various situations including environmental and people based situations. Protection of Vulnerable Adults (POVA)
This course is for all staff who work with vulnerable adults whether in a paid capacity or as a volunteer. We all need to understand how to identify abusers and abuse, and we need to know how to report suspected abuse without fear of retribution.
In this PC world that we find ourselves now, it is easy for staff to abuse without realising it, that means it is extra important for them to be aware of their actions.

Who may be the abuser, Patterns of abuse, Good practice guidelines, Preventative measures,

This course will show all staff the importance of good infection control practice within the Care Home setting and make them aware of the vulnerability of all residents.

This course is for all care staff but is not suitable for anyone who works in the kitchen full time, they should attend the basic food hygiene foundation course.

The law.
The aims: of this course are to inform the participants of the need for food hygiene, how bacteria grow and how we can reduce the risk of food poisoning. To explain how important personal hygiene is, the correct temperatures and the danger zone for temperatures where bacteria grow the fastest. To inform them of their duty of care and the law concerning the Food Safety Act 1990. To show them the correct way to work with best practice, including cleaning the food areas, pest control and the safe use of cleaning chemicals.
The learning objectives are: by the end of this course participants will have a clear understanding of what is expected of them when handling food, how to manage the food area hygiene, personal hygiene and understanding of best practice. They will be able to demonstrate their knowledge of the different types of bacteria both good and bad and how to handle food safely in order to avoid food poisoning.
Course is certificated and there will be a short questionnaire at the end of the course to assess the level of understanding by the participants.

This is a short course that can be delivered as part of the Infection Control or as a stand alone course.

Dementia Care
This course is about the care and treatment of Dementia, it is not definitive but will endeavour to present an overview of a very complex subject.

Mental Capacity Act (MCA)
The Mental Capacity Act 2005 was implemented in two stages, the first stage in April ’07 and the second in October ’07. This course is to introduce the MCA to all staff working in; Acute Hospital, Community and Primary care plus residential accommodation settings.
Course content: Introducing the MCA, What is an IMCA, What does the Act do? Background to the MCA, Which staff will be affected by the MCA? The “Five Core Principles”, What is lack of capacity?
